Key Practical Considerations for Custom Fixture Design

Technical Knowledge
Close-up of workpiece clamping fixture

The goal of non-standard fixture design is straightforward: keep the workpiece secure during machining while enabling fast loading and unloading. These two objectives often require trade-offs.

Locating surface and clamping force

Selecting the locating surface is critical. Prioritize datum planes from the drawing or machined flat surfaces. Avoid using surfaces with burrs, parting lines, or cast finishes as primary supports.

Clamp force direction and magnitude are equally critical. The force should be directed toward the locating surface to prevent lateral shifting of the workpiece; for thin-walled parts, distribute clamp points or add auxiliary supports to minimize clamping deformation.

Changeover Efficiency and Chip Evacuation Channel

Changeover efficiency is critical in multi-product manufacturing. Quick-change structures, standardized locating pins, and adjustable supports reduce changeover time and minimize reliance on operator expertise.

Finally, consider chip evacuation and coolant channels. The fixture design must not obstruct the cutting zone or impede chip removal and coolant delivery, as this can compromise machining performance and tool life.
