Key Points for Hole Position Consistency Control in Multi-Axis Drilling and Tapping

In multi-hole workpiece machining, hole consistency is rarely determined by a single factor. It results from the combined effects of clamping datum, spindle arrangement, feed parameters, and equipment condition. Any fluctuation in these areas can manifest as positional deviation or out-of-tolerance hole diameter in the finished part.
Clamping datum and spindle arrangement
Establishing the clamping datum is the first step. The locating surfaces of the workpiece in the fixture must align with the drawing datums to prevent clamping shifts caused by burrs, parting lines, or surface irregularities. For die-cast parts, verify the condition of the datum face before machining; add a pre-machining cleanup operation if necessary.

The spindle layout determines the relative positions of the holes. The distance between multi-spindle heads should be set according to the workpiece drawing. After assembly, verify the hole distribution through trial machining before proceeding to mass production.
Feed Parameters and Daily Inspection
Adjust feed rate based on material and hole diameter. Excessive feed rates can accelerate tool wear or cause breakage, especially with uneven material hardness or small diameters. For deep-hole machining, segmented feeds and peck drilling strategies are more reliable.
Finally, conduct routine verification of equipment status. Check whether the spindle runs smoothly, fixtures are secure, and cooling is adequate. Include these items in pre-shift inspections with fixed records to facilitate tracking when issues occur.
